5 Steps to Find a Talented Technical Partner

Starting a company is like starting a band, and like a band, you need strong team members to get to the top!

Today, you cannot start a company without some form of online presence, and that often creates the need for a technical partner. We hear complaints about how hard it is to find a well-suited technical partner all the time, “it’s impossible to find a good CTO”, “they are too expensive”, “they don’t understand”. The list goes on.

If you want to get the best of the best, then you’ll have to search far and wide on your developer scavenger hunt. Don’t let that discourage you, though! The Wiredelta® family is here to help guide you on your quest for web and mobile development masters. We came up with 5 distinct tips to position you the best when finding a technical partner. Keep these points in mind, choose wisely, and you’ll soon have a formidable technical squad!

1. Know where to look

First and foremost, you need to know where to search for your future technical partners. Start by asking people in your local network: friends, family, co-workers, friends of friends, neighbors, your dog, anyone. Directories like Meetup, Craigslist, and others might be the key to success for your ongoing search, at least to get the ball rolling. Even if you don’t find who you’re looking for at first, they might know of someone in their own circles who could help you. So don’t lose faith if you don’t find what you are looking for right off the bat, persistency will prevail.

2. Make sure they are adaptable

The software industry is like a river; it never stays in one place. First and foremost, one must recognize the fact that talent is a moving target. What is a standard requirement in one year might not be useful the next. The software industry moves remarkably fast. We even have a saying called “the framework of the year”, and as a result the ‘great developer’ is by no means a static thing. The best people within software are usually those that constantly evolve and challenge the status quo. You might have someone on your current team who is an Objective-C wizz; but times change, and with Apple open sourcing Swift pushing new iOS apps in this new technology, Objective-C will most likely die out! Programming languages and frameworks come and go, so unless your team is sharp enough to adapt to ever-changing tech trends, you’ll become a dinosaur in no time.

Also, do remember a key rule of thumb that recruiters use all the time. You don’t necessarily want to look at what people have done in the past, but what people can do in the future. Don’t believe me? Then why do you think college dropouts continue to disrupt the market with new inventions within technology and particularly software? Think about Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, all of whom quickly adapted to new technologies at their time and pursued an idea with no formal education.

In Wiredelta, we built our core around Wiredelta Institute. The Institute organizes advanced training programs within the modern web and mobile technologies, upgrading aspiring web and mobile developers with current trends. With Wiredelta Institute, finding potential technical partners and recruits that stand out among the rest is a piece of cake, and Wiredelta opens up for clients to connect with our talented graduates.

3. Align goals

You simply cannot form a company if you haven’t defined what you want to achieve. If you don’t know what you want to build, chances are you won’t, and you certainly will not find a good technical partner, whether it’s being outsourced or kept in-house.

Teamwork is like a two-way street, so make sure that everybody’s doing their part to help your company grow and learn. Plus, to make sure everybody does their part in the right way, everyone in your team needs to be aware of the goals you have set. Remember to clarify this immediately with whomever you’re partnering with.

4. Come up with a “battle plan”

If you are loosely defining how to reach the goal you want, by for instance starting to develop before designs were approved, there will inevitably be periods where either the designer or developer has to redo work. Your development team needs a clear-cut strategy to help accomplish your goals otherwise, you’ll be far behind in the startup race.

Keep communication open between yourself and your clients and allow workflows to move like clockwork. Having a road map to guide you along your company’s path will significantly help you find like-minded technical partners to collaborate with. Expect the unexpected and make sure you have a plan B in case shit really starts to hit the fan. In short, hope for the best and expect the worst.

5. Learn from each other

It’s all about the journey, building a web or mobile application can be long and hard, so make sure you enjoy the ride and learn along the way! As you pursue your entrepreneurial adventure, make every effort to teach and learn from your partners. For instance, a marketing specialist might not necessarily know anything about programming and vice versa. Learning from each other will align the team to “speak” each other’s languages. This creates a much more fulfilling environment without episodes of “lost in translation”!

Reaching a common goal through teamwork is like climbing a tall mountain. It can be a long and treacherous journey with lots of hardships on the way. You need to trust your teammates since you rely on them to survive. However, with the right climbing plan, and the right team on your side, the journey will be nothing short of adventurous and satisfactory, with amazing memories to last a lifetime. Everyone needs to know what the processes are; be sure all of you agree how to climb the mountain!

Finding a team to work with is only the start of an otherwise rewarding and prosperous journey. Together, you can create the best digital products that cyberspace has ever seen.

It’s business, but you can still grow strong personal relationships with your technical partners. Just remember: never partner up with anyone who doesn’t see eye to eye with you on even the most basic of principles. These people will likely be your technical partners for many years, so you might as well be on friendly terms with them from day 1. With a healthy amount of focus and the right attitude, your venture will be a fulfilling rollercoaster ride with lots of high-fives along the way…
