In August 2004, Where 2 became Google’s second-ever acquisition. In the “pre-Google Maps” era, the online maps market was dominated by MapQuest, a clunky scion of an analog cartographic business, later purchased by AOL. After the deal was made, the entire team behind the future Google Maps – which consisted of Noel Gordon, Stephen Ma, and the Danish-born Rasmussen brothers Lars and Jens – became Google employees.
