What Is Grammarly?

Grammarly is one of the best-known and most appreciated writing assisting tools, used daily by more than 10 million users. It comes in many shapes and forms. 

Grammarly's Creators

Alex Shevchenko, Max Lytvyn, and Dmytro Lider started in Kyiv, Ukraine, and together developed Grammarly by studying written content and research databases.   

Before Grammarly

In 2002, Grammarly’s founders released a plagiarism checker Mydropbox. But its functionality was limited, which led to the birth of Grammarly.

Technology Behind Grammarly

Grammarly uses Common Lisp as its backend grammar engine, as well as Machine Learning and Deep Learning for data analysis.

2010 - Grammarly Editor’s

At first, Grammarly only had its Web Editor available of their website. But, the tool already had 150,000 students as registered users, thanks to Mydropbox.  

2013 - Microsoft Office add-in

In 2013 Grammarly became available on Outlook and as a Microsoft Office add-in to make the tool even more convenient.  

2015 - Browser extensions and Freemium model

 In 2015 Grammarly launched browser extensions and released a Freemium Model, reaching 1 million daily users.

2016 - Desktop App

Through the desktop app, the users are now able to reach the tool straight from a desktop rather than through a browser. 

Mobile Keyboards Introduced in 2017 

The phone keyboard is active on your phone’s browser, apps, and everything else that involves your keyboard

2018 - Grammarly Business

Grammarly Business added features like admin panel, team usage statistics, and others. Also, Grammarly made the browser extensions fully compatible with Google Docs.     

2019 - Measuring even more success

The tool was titled the first "Unicorn" of Ukraine due to $1 billion raised in funding and even expanded from 1 million to 20 million daily active users

2020 - Grammarly for iPad  

In 2020 Grammarly reached 30 million active users and introduced Grammarly for iPad.
