Wiredelta & NightBirds – Nightlife Gone Mobile

NightBirds is a social network based on video check-ins. To find out what’s going on in a city has never been easier. This mobile application provides a real-time snapshot of the atmosphere at the places and events happening in a targeted location. In addition to that, there is an option to invite and thus encourage other students to find each other for grabbing a drink, get food or have a big party!
The NightBirds app allows you to check-in only from 6 pm to 6 am. Every night at 6 p.m., the Map resets and the experience starts again.

Wiredelta does not have a maintenance agreement in place with this client, therefore all changes and updates that occurred after this date have been made by the client.

The goal

The idea of the project is to make the students aware that Nightbirds is the new way to capture and convey the night life. The need for being mobile active is obvious, as this app wants to move all communication vectors to a single channel. The Nightbirds app makes the “bet” that video is the best way to appreciate the ambiance of a place/event, blasting it out to the community.

The solution

To start out, the app needs to be built natively on iOS using Swift and then on Android using Java. The app is exclusively focusing on the users, so they get access to the app during online usage. For the first version of the app, we included a special feature dedicated to students of EDHEC Business School in Lille, France. Therefore, they can use the app as a new and effective tool to promote their union events.

Structure

The mobile app for NightBirds is made very simple and intuitive. It contains a few easy user panels, such as:
Log in/Register: Users create a new account. Later, they can use Email or Facebook to log in. Personal data from Facebook are very limited.
The map shows all “PINS” according to their location.
Pins that display how many users are at the current location. Clicking on one will show extended details about the spot. The pin is colored according to the overall rating. That means that if more users have rated it “HOT”, it will be more red and if the majority votes “NOT”, it will be more blue. The pins’ color will change gradually, depending on how many people voted for what.
Account: Profile information is displayed in this section. Moreover, users can watch or delete their own videos. People can find a logout button here as well.

Design

A palette of colors is mainly focused on black and blue, added with yellow phosphorescent light. Moreover, our developers used slight, uncluttered typography. So the design of the app does not look greasy and heavy. App’s logo is made of a pale yellow full moon and the shadow of a big owl on a dark blue or black branch. We used black or dark blue color paled to yellow for a barometer as well. In addition, this means black “NOT HOT” / yellow “HOT” evaluation using a cursor.

Functions

Creating pins is definitely not difficult. Users can pin a place just with their location or add with video record, by pressing a button on the map screen. Later, a Pin needs to be rated as either “HOT” or “NOT”. The location where the Pin was made gets saved to the Database together with the rest of the information. In addition to that, the users can share the event by clicking the Facebook button.
Pins as videos from the camera: Video is an effective and trustful way of promotion. Native phone camera in-app provides enable/disable flash option and toggle front/back camera. The videos can maximum be 15 seconds long.
Click on the video plays the video in the app full screen using a built-in video player. It is also possible to zoom or stop the video. Videos are still available on the NightBirds Map for consultation during the day, as a memory of yesterday’s parties.

Conclusion

One of the great features is that you can receive an invitation to meet your friends. Afterward, you are able to respond to the invitation and tell your friends that you’re coming to meet them. You can also make a list of your friends or add new people in there.
NightBirds is only alive from 6 pm to 6 am. Every night at 6 p.m., the NightBirds Map resets and the experience starts again. And why? Because

“What is said at night never sees the daylight”.
